What to Do

In Your Office or Workstation

Staff are responsible for taking waste from their office or work stations to the Central Waste Stations. Here are some options to make it work for you --

  1. Kick the Can! Get rid of your personal bin and take ergo breaks to visit the Central Waste Stations.

  2. Add Mini-Bins! These clip on to your main bin. Most people then use the existing, larger bin for recycling. The clip-on bins are offered at no cost from Sustainable Berkeley Lab and distributed by your Building or Division.

  3. Choose Your Own. See the options in the Personal Bin Menu, and coordinate with your Division to obtain these bins.

Central Waste Stations

  • Consult the signs and What Goes Where (below) find out what goes in which bin

  • Check out the WasteGuide for more

  • Central stations for Landfill, recycling, and compost are distributed throughout the Lab, often near elevators and in break rooms.

  • Sustainable Berkeley Lab works with building managers, occupants, and custodial staff to ensure that central stations are standardized and accessible.

In Restrooms

  • Put Used Paper Towels in containers labeled “paper towels only”, to be composted.

  • Dispose of other items in the waste containers located in bathroom stalls, or a landfill bin.

In Labs

Much of Laboratory waste can be composted, recycled, or reused, including used paper towels and various forms of packaging.

  • All Labs should contain recycling and landfill bins.

  • Some also contain compost. If you would like compost for paper towels in your lab, please contact sbl@lbl.gov

  • Use the Waste Guide for what to do with other Lab waste

Cleaning Out Your Workspace

When cleaning out your workspace --

  • Remember that most items do not belong in landfill, e.g., old paper files should go in paper recycling.

  • Get prepared by ordering extra bins.
